Trends in beauty are ever changing and it can be hard to keep up! Luckily, we are here to help. Make sure you follow these simple tips when it comes to updating your beauty regimen this year!
1. Choose the right foundation
To match yourself to the right shade, apply foundation beginning at the jawline and slightly onto your upper neck using a cosmetic sponge or applicator. If the color seems to disappear into your own skin, you’ve met your match! Don’t be too concerned about how light or dark your skin is; what’s more important is matching the foundation with the undertones in your skin: Cool, Warm or Neutral. If you’re cool, you will tend to appear more flushed when exposed to the sun and can burn easily. You’ll want to select a shade with a rosie, pink or blue base. If you’re warm-toned you quickly bronze or tan in the sun. The best shades for you will be those with a yellow or golden base. If you’re fortunate enough to wear and pull off any color of clothing, eyeshadow or lipstick, chances are you’re a neutral. Shade selection isn’t the only important factor. Foundations come with a variety of benefits and textures, i.e. anti-aging, full coverage, long wear, dewy, waterproof and many, many more. Make sure you’re choosing a foundation that will address your specific skin concerns and needs.
2. Get your brows done… Professionally!
The brows frame and accentuate the features of the face. That is, of course, if they are groomed the correct way. Getting a regular brow wax (or threading, whatever method suits you) will keep them looking refined and your face looking alert and bright. Also opt in for a brow tint at your next appointment. What a difference! Having your brows tinted will result in a natural yet full, more sophisticated look without the hassle and maintenance of having to fill them in every day.
3. Ditch the glitter
Yes, I know it’s pretty. Yes, I know it’s sparkly. Should be a terrific combo, right? Unless you’re 15yrs old or every day is New Year’s Eve the answer is no. It’s a tough and harsh truth but the reality is that glitter and sparkly textures on the eyes and skin will age you. Products like this will find and settle into even the smallest and finest of lines, drawing attention in the wrong way or to the wrong place. If you’re looking for something to highlight or accentuate with, opt for finely milled shimmer creams or liquids and apply them to small areas only.
4. Over lining your lips
Full, plumped up lips is a beauty trend that isn’t going anywhere. Avoid using fillers and injections by going a more natural route! Knowing how to line your lips the right way can be a perfect solution, although can be a train wreck if not executed properly. Choose a lip liner in the same shade as the lipstick you’re going to wear (or for a neutral look, choose a liner that matches your natural lip color) & line the outside of your natural lip line. Then go in and fill in your entire lip with the pencil. This will avoid you having only a line around your lips if your lipstick happens to fade. And keep that pencil sharpened for the most refined and polished finish!
5. Less is more
I know the heavily contoured looks and tutorials you see online are tempting… But please, leave this one to the makeup artists who are working in photography and film. Contouring is NOT for every day makeup. The allure of sculpting your face into a chiseled, structured piece of art does not translate in real life and is simply not flattering. It is impossible for such dark shades and tones on the skin to appear natural, it just looks overdone. Stick with softer looks that compliment your features. Fresh skin and bright eyes are so much more beautiful!
